5 “secret” places in the province of Bari that you may not have known

When you think of the province of Bari, you probably immediately think of famous and highly touristy locations like Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, or Alberobello.

Beautiful places, of course, but if it’s true that beauty is made up of details, the magic of Puglia lies right there: small corners of authentic life.
In this article, we’ll show you just a tiny fraction of these “secret” must-see places for a trip to the province of Bari, which is a bit different from how travel guides describe it.

Unexpected views, quiet villages and hidden places that really manage to surprise you. Here are 5 secret spots from the province of Bari that you may not have known.

1. Poggiorsini – the smallest village in the province

In the heart of the Alta Murgia National Park is Poggiorsini, the smallest municipality in the province of Bari.
Here you’ll find boundless landscapes, rolling hills, and vantage points where the sounds of nature are the soundtrack that accompanies every traveler. You absolutely cannot miss the viewpoint along the SP8, from which you can observe one of the most spectacular views of the Murgia.

Strolling through the small historic center, you’ll experience an authentic atmosphere, made up of quiet streets, stone houses, and slow rhythms that convey the true soul of Puglia’s hinterland. Also worth a visit are the Mother Church dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows and the nature trails that cross the surrounding countryside, ideal for trekking, cycling or simply for admiring the Murgian landscape up close.

A few kilometers from the town are also the evocative ruins of the Rocca del Garagnone, an ancient medieval fortification immersed in the nature of the Alta Murgia, perfect for those who love places rich in charm and history.

Poggiorsini is the perfect place to take a break from the chaos and experience a still little-known part of Puglia.

2. Pulo di Altamura – the prehistoric sinkhole

A few kilometers from Altamura you can visit its famous Pulo: a gigantic karst sinkhole over 70 meters deep, among the largest in the Alta Murgia and a true natural spectacle that seems “opens” suddenly in the flat landscape.

The walls house caves and natural cavities frequented since prehistoric times, in a truly particular setting to see live. Curiously, this enormous “natural crater” has no volcanic origins: it formed slowly over time thanks to the action of water on the limestone rock, which carved and shaped the subsoil until it collapsed.

Furthermore, on quieter days, the Pulo becomes a small ecosystem in its own right: various bird species find refuge among the rock faces, making the landscape even more evocative.

Also nearby is the Lamalunga Cave, famous for the discovery of ’Altamura Man, one of the most important Neanderthal remains in Europe.

If you love places that tell ancient stories, this is a stop that is absolutely worth the trip.

3. Gravina Sotterranea – the hidden city

Beneath the historic center of Gravina in Puglia lies a veritable underground world of tunnels, rock-cut rooms, ancient cellars, and rock-hewn churches.

With the help of specialized tour guides, you can explore these hidden spaces and discover a side of the country that many don’t even imagine. Interestingly, this underground system is so extensive that in the past was used as an “alternative” connection between different areas of the village, creating a real parallel city below street level.

The route also allows you to reach the famous aqueduct-bridge, one of the most scenic spots in Gravina: suspended at great height over the ravine, it offers a spectacular view especially at sunset. Not surprisingly, some scenes from the James Bond film “No Time to Die” were filmed right here.

Another peculiarity is precisely the scenic effect of the bridge, which seems “to cut” the landscape from side to side, making it one of the most photographed places in the entire Murgia area.

A different experience than usual, perfect if you want to see something really special.

4. Church of Santa Maria di Barsento – trekking in the Murgia

Between Noci and the Itria Valley lies the Church of Santa Maria di Barsento, nestled in the Murgia countryside and surrounded by one of the most characteristic landscapes in the area.

It is one of the oldest rural churches in Puglia: its origins date back to the Early Middle Ages and, even today, it retains an essential and almost suspended charm, typical of places of worship built along ancient communication routes.

From here you can do trekking for about 12 km following ancient rural paths, including the so-called Via Antiqua, a historic route that connected important transit routes in the area. An interesting curiosity is that these trails were not only used for trade, but also for the seasonal movements of rural communities and herders.

Along the way you will cross open meadows, woods and paths immersed in the typical vegetation of Murgia, in a landscape that continuously changes light and colors depending on the seasons.

It’s an ideal experience if you love walking in nature and want to discover a more authentic part of the Apulian hinterland.

5. Gallophoria – the open-air museum of Rutigliano

In Rutigliano, a town famous for its terracotta whistles, there is a somewhat special exhibition. It’s called “Gallophorie” and it’s the Open Sky Museum of Terracotta Whistles of Rutigliano. A local association, in collaboration with the Municipality of Rutigliano, has installed several terracotta works of considerable size (up to 1.20 m) on the buildings in the historic center. This museum is, of course, open h24 and you don’t need a ticket to visit. Just venture through the streets of the old village and… look up.

There are actually other ways to best visit it. By scanning the QR code on any license plate or visiting the website, you can start with a guided tour directly on Google Maps but the advice we give you is to take a tour with a guide (also contactable on Galloforie’s social media) and enjoy a very special walk through stories, anecdotes and visits to the shop.
