Conical roofs, living stone, and often mysterious symbols: the trulli are one of Puglia’s symbols worldwide. If you want to visit the trulli of Alberobello and prepare for one of Puglia’s wonders, this article will tell you everything you need to know before embarking on a unique day trip.
Alberobello (Metropolitan City of Bari) is considered the “capital” of the trulli. According to estimates, it is home to approximately 1,500 different trulli, concentrated mainly in the town center. It is a small village with about 10,000 inhabitants, but in 2024 alone, it recorded over 325,000 visitors. This impressive number confirms how much the entire world appreciates the authentic simplicity of Puglia and, in particular, the trulli of Alberobello.
Why are trulli made like this?
This question opens up several very interesting stories. Trulli are buildings whose architecture has ancient roots, dating back to ancient Greece. Their structure, in fact, recalls the “tholos,” constructions (often funerary) characterized by a dome. In Puglia—and in Southern Italy in general—trulli were built as temporary shelters in the countryside or permanent homes for farmers.
These buildings are made entirely of limestone, used to build dry-stone walls (without mortar or other “glues”) about one meter high. From the base, the stones are arranged until their iconic dome is created, topped with an ornament at the top. Their white color is given by lime: not just a building material, but a way to disinfect the environment.
Simple and modest peasant homes, yes, but they hide a very interesting history.
The trulli village was born—according to popular tales—as a case of tax evasion. How? In the 15th century, a law was in effect that imposed taxes on new settlements like Alberobello. Thus, to avoid paying this tax, trulli were built. By removing a key stone that supported the entire structure, the houses could be hidden and subsequently rebuilt in the event of an inspection.

Where to see the most beautiful trulli in Alberobello
It’s a misconception that trulli are unique to Alberobello. These distinctive structures are widespread throughout the Apulian countryside, and it’s not uncommon to find them elsewhere in Southern Italy. However, Alberobello is unique in having over 1,500, concentrated primarily in its two historic UNESCO World Heritage districts: Monti District (approximately 1,030 trulli) and Aia Piccola District (approximately 590 trulli).
The most beautiful ones in our opinion? Here they are:
- Monti District: This is the most iconic and photographed area of Alberobello, with hundreds of trulli lined up side by side. It’s also home to small shops, artisan workshops, and perfect spots for a stroll among the village’s landmarks.
- Aia Piccola District: Quieter and more authentic, this is the area where you can still feel the daily life among the trulli. Less touristy, it’s ideal for observing the village from a more intimate perspective.
- The Trullo Sovrano: It is the only two-story trullo in Alberobello and is one of the most unique structures in the entire historic complex. Today, it can be visited and offers a better understanding of life inside these dwellings.
- Casa Pezzolla: A complex of trulli now transformed into a local museum, where you can learn about the history, evolution, and traditions of the village.
- The Church of Sant’Antonio: A church built in the trulli style, with its characteristic conical shape. A unique example of religious architecture perfectly integrated into the Alberobello landscape.
