The Basilica of San Nicola

You can’t talk about Bari without starting from the Basilica of San Nicola, the spiritual heart of the city. The relics of the Saint that made Bari famous throughout the world are kept here. This is one of the clearest examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture, with extensive use of limestone and the classic Latin commissa cross plan. Its construction took more than 100 years and its birth is closely linked to the arrival in Bari of the stolen relics of Saint Nicholas on 9 May 1087.

Fascinating and mystical events take place inside the basilica, such as the Miracle of the Sacred Manna, a transparent and fragrant liquid that exudes annually from the tomb of Saint Nicholas in the crypt, a pilgrimage destination for many faithful at any time of year.

Walking among the naves, frescoes, and Romanesque arches, one breathes an atmosphere of calm and devotion, a place where past and present meet harmoniously. Perfect to start the day with a moment of contemplation and wonder.

The Normanno-Svevo Castle

In a city with a thousand-year history like Bari, it’s impossible not to include the Svevo Castle on your itinerary: a symbol of power and medieval history.
U Castídde,as it is known to the people of Bari, would seem to date back to a time before the Normans and Swabians from whom it takes its name. Inside, in fact, artefacts have been found that have led historians to hypothesize its existence as early as the Roman-Greek era.

A little curiosity for lovers of classical literature: In Horace’s Satires and Tacitus’ Annals, reference is made to ancient Barium and a fortification that would seem to coincide with the castle we tell you about.

Today the castle hosts exhibitions and cultural events, but walking within its walls means taking a real dive into the city’s history.

The Orecchiette Road and Bari Vecchia

Near the Svevo Castle, a real experience not to be missed at all.
They have become social media stars, but in Bari we know them simply as Nunzia, Angela, Rosa and the others “lords of the orecchiette”. They are now a living part of local folklore, but for all Apulians they are a bastion of an all-Apulian tradition that smells of home and love. An Instagram story is a must.
Obviously, the street of orecchiette (via Arco Basso, if you search for it on Google Maps) is one of the pearls of a much more precious treasure: Bari Vecchia.

If you’re a football fan, this name isn’t new to you. It is the neighborhood where footballer Antonio Cassano was born and raised. If you prefer literary references, here is how Italo Calvino described Bari Vecchia in Finibusterre (1954):

«… The world around the ancient Saint Nicholas is an anthill drunk with vitality. Old courtyards are rooms, old chapels are warehouses, a staircase breaks through a wall, a wall raises its head above the ceiling. The seller of dried and salted tomatoes passes by with his arm outstretched and his incomprehensible wail excites the appetite. Then a thousand half-naked children stick out their piece of bread. While the mother combs the comare, the daughter makes pasta on a wide stone, in front of the door of the house. With a pinch of pasta he gives birth to other puppets, he blows us up: go play, get out of here. Thus old Bari multiplies infinitely, thank God, it grows new and never dies.»

Arnaldo di Crollalanza seafront

No visit to Bari would be complete without a stroll along the seafront. The sea breeze, the sea panorama and the view of the old town make this stretch unique. It is the ideal place for a relaxing break, to take some panoramic photos or simply to be enveloped by the salty air of the Apulian coast.

The area is famous for the 197 iconic streetlights that adorn the route, which have become one of the city’s most famous symbols. The whole walk is a real embrace between the beauty of the sea and the imposing Art Nouveau buildings that make up the skyline.

Looking for a slightly unconventional but extremely distinctive aperitif? Ad “N’derr a lanz” (as the people of Bari call it), you will have the opportunity to enjoy freshly caught raw sea, preferably accompanied by a cold beer.
